MEDIA BROADCAST provides information on satellite services and the introduction of DVB-T2 in Germany

25. August 2015 MEDIA BROADCAST will be focussing on the future of terrestrial distribution via DVB-T2/HEVC as well as satellite platforms and services with wide-area coverage. The leading full-service provider in the broadcasting and media industry will be presenting its innovative solutions for all areas of the broadcast sector in the RAI Amsterdam. The IBC, the leading international broadcasting industry trade fair, is taking place on 11 to 15 September 2015.

Germany all set for DVB-T2 Premiering the future of digital-terrestrial television: MEDIA BROADCAST will be launching the new terrestrial television in Germany in the spring of 2016, and for the first time will be combining the DVB-T2 standard with the efficient HEVC compression method. This will open up completely new opportunities for viewers and TV providers alike. Around 40 programmes will be distributed via DVB-T2, mostly in sharp HD quality. As well as the "traditional" DVB-T2 distribution, further hybrid products in addition to the multithek will be available in the future. At its stand at the IBC, MEDIA BROADCAST will be demonstrating the signal quality of DVB-T2, supplied by the current test broadcasting station in Berlin.

The launch of DVB-T2 in Germany provides viewers with significant improvements in terms of broadcasts and picture quality while maintaining ease of use and cost-effective reception. TV providers will benefit from significantly greater programme distribution capacity - now also in HD - and new business models as well as greater technical coverage. In this way, DVB-T2 will strengthen the competitive position of the third-most important TV reception method among distribution channels in Germany.

The introductory phase of DVB-T2 in Germany is planned for the early summer of 2016, among other things with the first HD broadcasts of public and private programme providers. Regular operation will start in the first quarter of 2017 - initially in urban centres, then extending step by step to rural regions. The conversion from the current DVB-T standard to the successor system DVB-T2 is expected to be completed with full coverage by the middle of 2019.

Satellite services for contribution and distribution Platforms for TV distribution
Further highlights shown by MEDIA BROADCAST at IBC 2015 include the satellite platforms and services. These offer TV providers the best coverage and flexible options for signal contribution and distribution. The focus is on the four MEDIA BROADCAST satellite platforms on leading satellite positions for the EMEA region: Capacities are available both on the two premium positions Astra 19.2° East and Eutelsat HOT BIRD 13° East, and at 23.5° East (SES Astra) and 9° East (Eutelsat). Point-to-point connections provide connectivity and act as the platforms for Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Direct-to-Cable (DTC). Complemented by powerful uplinks, the footprint of the MEDIA BROADCAST satellite services covers around 225 million TV households in 50 countries.

IP streaming via satellite with NewsSpotter+
MEDIA BROADCAST is also presenting NewsSpotter+, the powerful news gathering service for mobile and extremely flexible IP-based SNG services from the field. NewsSpotter+ allows end-to-end IP-based transmission with continuous quality of service for TV broadcasters or On Demand providers who require temporary, flexible transmission capacity in the AV sector. The solution utilises satellite-based IP connections via the high throughput satellite Eutelsat KASAT and is connected to the Broadcast NGN (Next Generation Network) of MEDIA BROADCAST. With around 130 connected customers, this allows users to reach the majority of the broadcasting community in Germany.

The MEDIA BROADCAST trade show presentation at IBC in Amsterdam will be rounded out by comprehensive information on the Usingen Teleport. Over 60 powerful Ku-, Ka-, C- and Xband antennas for Uplink, Downlink and Turnaround at the teleport form the hub for the international broadcasting community. They provide a satellite gateway to the world for TV channels and companies with various data transmission needs to Europe, Asia and other continents. In addition there are high-performance connections to international optical fibre PoPs. The internet node of DE-CIX in Frankfurt am Main, the world's largest internet node in terms of data throughput, is less than 30 km air-line distance from the teleport. Orbit positions from 76° East to 60° West can be reached directly via the satellite antennas.

Multiple DVB-S/S2 platforms allow for content distribution in SD and HD quality. iDirect VON services are also available. Ongoing monitoring and operation of the teleport and all
connected transmission pathways are ensured through 24/7 monitoring from our own Network Operations Centre. Equipment housing, e.g. for the head end of Entertain, is ensured through air-conditioned and fully secured rooms.
