Harris Broadcast PowerSmart 3D Architecture Strengthens Green Transmission Benefits for Broadcasters

Harris Broadcast, breaks new ground in over-the-air efficiency with PowerSmart® 3D, a green, energy-efficient architecture at the core of Harris Broadcast’s DTV and digital radio transmission solutions introduced this week.

PowerSmart 3D elevates the high-efficiency technology of the traditional PowerSmart architecture to the next level to deliver superior operational efficiencies. This includes fully broadband, single-amplifier designs specific to each over-the-air band (UHF and VHF), powering transmission across the spectrum — a key differentiator since most competitive solutions require various amplifier versions for different frequencies. PowerSmart 3D also significantly reduces installation transmitter footprints through exceptional power density, with rack space reductions exceeding 50 percent across most power levels.

Like its predecessor, PowerSmart 3D will also help local and national broadcasters significantly reduce energy use and carbon footprint. Its unrivaled operating efficiency will help MaxivaTM customers lower monthly bills and enhance total cost of ownership without compromise to power or reliability.

“The ability to efficiently deliver media content from multiple platforms is critical to both ensuring the long-term viability of an operation and supporting the various ways consumers receive content,” said Rich Redmond, vice president of product management and strategy, Harris Broadcast. “Our robust, future-proof transmission solutions enable broadcasters to deploy highly efficient solutions to reliably reach over-the-air audiences across local markets and national networks. Harris Broadcast is also staying ahead of the curve with our patent-pending PowerSmart 3D technology, delivering rock-solid reliability along with significant annual cost savings for our customers.”

This week, Harris Broadcast unveiled its new UHF and VHF solutions which allow broadcasters to reliably deliver high quality content to media consumers anywhere in the world, supporting global DTV and digital radio standards through software-definable exciter technology.

Harris Broadcast’s platform delivers an enhanced and simple broadband solution for UHF. Its pioneering PowerSmart 3D amplifier designs provide up to a 58 percent efficiency improvement over previous technologies. The new design also eliminates the bandwidth limitations and complexities of more commonly used amplifier designs within digital transmitters. Its modular approach, lighter weight, and hot pluggable amplifiers and power supplies also simplify maintenance, further reducing operating costs.

Furthermore, Harris Broadcast’s new VHF solutions provide DTV and DAB digital radio broadcasters with efficient air-cooled platforms featuring PowerSmart 3D amplifier designs, power consumption optimization and cooling efficiency for best-in-class operation. Its vastly reduced footprint is particularly helpful for national broadcasters operating large networks from space-challenged facilities; or local broadcasters filling in coverage gaps across expansive areas.
