Roscosmos and Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources to organize digital space monitoring

October 26, 2020

On October 26, 2020, a working meeting was held between Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of Roscosmos, and Dmitry Kobylkin, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. The meeting focused on the creation of digital space monitoring for effective control of forest management, waste management and environmental monitoring using Earth’s remote sensing. This system will allow to quickly receive information about the state and status of natural resources and lands usage, track the activity of economic entities and the potential economic effect of their activities.

‘Space can and should be useful to the state. Together with the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia, we will establish a system for digital space inspection of our country's natural resources and objects of special attention that are harmful to the environment or are negatively affected by pollutants. For this, in parallel with the development of the orbital constellation, we are improving the ground infrastructure,’ Dmitry Rogozin noted.

‘The environmental agenda is ubiquitous and concerns every citizen, and the topic of ecology will never fade into the background. The creation of a unified space monitoring system will prevent natural disasters and man-caused emergencies, as well as ensure greater environmental safety of the country. This is a difficult work, but I am absolutely convinced that thanks to our cooperation we will establish this system,’ Dmitry Kobylkin emphasized.
