Spacecom Deploys Cellular-Satellite Hybrid Broadband Internet Project in Cameroon

17 November 2015

Spacecom announced that the AMOS-5 satellite at the 17°E prime orbital position is now providing Cameroon with Sub-Saharan Africa's first large-scale cellular-satellite hybrid broadband Internet project. Spacecom is cooperating with Ringo S. A., a Cameroon ISP, to supply over 120 educational institutions, community centers and rural villages with stable and fast broadband Internet connections.

The project answers the growing demand for better Internet service throughout the country. Spacecom's hybrid service brings affordable broadband Internet and excellent service to the country's rural and outlying regions users with ease. The solution allows users to take advantage of satellite for downloading data while relying on cellular or other terrestrial data networks for Internet upload requests.

According to Olivier Leloustre, CEO & Founder of Ringo S.A., "Providing affordable Broadband Internet service throughout all of Cameroon is bringing a new wave of activity benefiting the public and private sectors. Ringo is proud to be leading this effort and continuing to building the future of Cameroon."

Sharon Weissman Burbea, Spacecom VP Sales French Speaking Africa, commented, "With more citizens throughout Africa using internet services, especially those in outlying and rural areas, our successful project combining cellular and satellite represents a milestone for the continent. We are currently working to further develop this service in other African markets."

Spacecom's hybrid solution for broadband provision is based on satellite broadband downlink and GSM uplink which enables low cost entry setup. Here a user sends a request to the cloud via a GSM modem and all the information is accessed from the satellite with a high throughput downlink. System installation is easy and largely the same irrespective of location, a plus for planning and budgeting.

AMOS-5 represents a total solution for broadcast and data clients in Africa with excellent coverage, a strong footprint, and reliable and powerful signals throughout the continent. AMOS-5's three Ku-band beams and its pan-African C-band beam add value to broadcasters, data, telecommunication and Internet providers as well as governments and multi-national corporations.
