Comtech Awarded $1m Equipment Order to Support GSM Backhaul Network Upgrade & Expansion in Africa

Comtech EF Data Corp., was awarded a $1.0 million order for Satellite Modems and RF equipment, including RAN Optimization products from Comtech EF Data’s subsidiary, Memotec. A North African GSM operator will utilize the equipment to support its satellite-based GSM backhaul network upgrade and expansion.

The mobile operator is upgrading its GSM network to support increased throughput demands and to provide a heightened Quality of Experience to its subscribers. To support this network upgrade, the CDM-625A Advanced Satellite Modem with DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier bandwidth compression and VersaFEC-2 forward error correction will be deployed along with the CXU RAN Optimization. This combination of advanced technologies provides the multi-layer optimization and intelligent traffic handling that will enable the mobile operator to minimize OPEX and CAPEX while maximizing throughput and availability.

In addition to increasing the throughput capabilities of its network for existing remote sites, the operator is also increasing its addressable market by adding satellite links to connect additional remote locations. The CDM-625A Advanced Satellite Modem, the LPOD Block Up Converter and the CXU RAN Optimization will be utilized to provide the most net efficient solution possible. This fusion of technologies will provide the operator the reliability, performance and optimization required to run its GSM backhaul network optimally.

“As an existing Comtech customer, this GSM operator selected our equipment based on proven product quality and support,” commented Dr. Stanton Sloane, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. “We are pleased to enable this operator to grow its business profitably and continue to provide connectivity to the most remote of locations.”
