Khrunichev Launcher Performance Statistics in 2008-2012

15 August 2012

A number of media sources are alleging that ‘according to the available statistics, from 30 to 40% of all failures in the Russian space industry are attributable to launcher systems developed and manufactured by the Khrunichev Space Center’. The real statistics of launches in which Khrunichev products were used over the past five years are as follows:

All off-nominal situations occurred during the Upper Stage Booster operations. The rocket itself, i.e. Stages 1-3, performed nominally in all the above launches.

2008

Ten (10) Proton launches:

Four (4) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - all launches were successful.

Six (6) for international customers – one of them a failed launch: the AMC-14 spacecraft did not reach the design orbit due to a failure during the 2nd burn of the main engine on board the Breeze M upper stage booster, a Khrunichev product.

2009

Ten (10) Proton launches:

Three (3) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - all launches were successful.

Seven (7) for international customers - all launches were successful.

2010

Twelve (12) Proton launches:

Four (4) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - one of them a failed launch: the Glonass satellites were not orbited due a failure of Block DM upper stage, an RSC Energia product.

Eight (8) for international customers - all launches were successful.

2011

Nine (9) Proton launches:

Four (4) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - one of them a failed launch: the Express-АМ4 satellite was not orbited due a failure of Breeze M upper stage.

Five (5) for international customers - all launches were successful.

2012

As of today, there have been seven (7) Proton launches:

Two (2) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - one of them a failed launch: the Express-MD2 and Telcom 3 satellites did not reach the design orbit due to a Breeze M upper stage failure during the stage operation, resulting in the satellites staying on an off—nominal orbit.

Rockot Launсh Vehicle

Eight (8) launches in the 2008-2012 period:

Five (5) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - one of them a failed launch: the GEO-IK satellite was not orbited due a failure of Breeze KM upper stage.

Three (3) for international customers - all launches were successful.

Kosmos 3M Launсh Vehicle (Manufacturer: PO Polyot, a KhSC branch)

Five (5) launches in the 2008-2012 period:

Two (2) under the RF FSP and in the interests of the RF MoD - all launches were successful.

Three (3) for international customers - all launches were successful.
