satellite
services
licence

The
UAE
Telecommunications
Regulatory
Authority
(TRA)
Sunday
awarded
Al
Yah
Satellite
Communications
Company
(Yahsat)
a
10-year
satellite
services
licence
for
the
installation,
operation
and
management
of a
public
telecommunications
network
and
provision
of
satellite
telecommunications
services
in
the
UAE.
Under
this
licence,
Yahsat
will
offer
a
wide
portfolio
of
voice,
data,
video
and
internet
connectivity
solutions
designed
to
accommodate
the
demand
for
emerging
applications,
like
HDTV
and
other
broadband
satellite
services
for
both
commercial
and
government
for
the
Middle
East,
Africa,
Europe
and
South-West
Asia.
The
licence
comes
under
the
Federal
Law
Decree
No 3
for
2003
and
its
amendments.
"This
is
the
first
time
we
are
awarding
a
satellite
services
licence.
Yahsat
will
pay
TRA
Dh100,000
a
year
in
licence
fees,"
Mohammad
Nasser
Al
Ganem,
director
general
of
TRA,
told
reporters
on
the
sidelines
of a
news
conference.
"Licensing
Yahsat
comes
as
confirmation
of
the
role
of
TRA
in
driving
the
tele-communications
market
in
the
country
to
compete
globally,"
he
said.
