Yahsat gets satellite services licence

1 March 2010

The UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) Sunday awarded Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat) a 10-year satellite services licence for the installation, operation and management of a public telecommunications network and provision of satellite telecommunications services in the UAE.

Under this licence, Yahsat will offer a wide portfolio of voice, data, video and internet connectivity solutions designed to accommodate the demand for emerging applications, like HDTV and other broadband satellite services for both commercial and government for the Middle East, Africa, Europe and South-West Asia.

The licence comes under the Federal Law Decree No 3 for 2003 and its amendments.

"This is the first time we are awarding a satellite services licence. Yahsat will pay TRA Dh100,000 a year in licence fees," Mohammad Nasser Al Ganem, director general of TRA, told reporters on the sidelines of a news conference.

"Licensing Yahsat comes as confirmation of the role of TRA in driving the tele-communications market in the country to compete globally," he said.
