Hormuud Telecom, Somalia Inc., Among the First to Deploy O3b Networks Cellular Backhaul Service in Africa

March 9, 2015

O3b Networks announced that Hormuud Telecommunication has signed a multi-year agreement to deploy O3b’s unique satellite network connectivity in the capital Mogadishu, as well as central and southern Somalia. The Somali Mobile Network Operator (MNO) will be deploying O3b’s trunking solution, O3bTrunk, in the capital city, as well as O3bCell for mobile backhaul in other areas of central and southern Somalia.

Hormuud Telecommunication started operations in April 2002 from the capital city Mogadishu, and now leads Somalia’s telecommunication industry. It is the biggest Operator in Somalia in terms of customer base and in terms of coverage. It provides state-of-the-art services to its customers.  Hormuud Telecom Offers ALL types of Data Services such as Fixed Broad Band(FBB), Mobile Broad Band (MBB) , WiFi and Voice Service. It is now in the process of launching Public and Private Cloud Services. The MNO covers ALL towns and villages of the southern and central regions of Somalia. It is very involved in charitable community programs with an emphasis on poverty alleviation, education and social development.

The deployment of O3b connectivity by Hormuud is part of a broader roll out that will cover most of the big towns in the Southern and Central regions of Somalia by satellite using the new O3b satellite services. O3b Networks will land 700km wide satellite beams in Central and Southern Somalia to provide Hormuud with unprecedented, reliable connectivity across these Regions.

The O3b satellite constellation brings unmatched benefits for satellite connectivity. Being in a unique orbit closer to the earth than conventional geostationary satellites, the satellites provide reduced latency, increased throughput and improved voice and video quality for the user.  The high throughput O3b satellites also offer much greater capacity, supporting up to 1.6 Gbps in a single beam.

Ahmed M. Yuusuf, Chairman & CEO of Hormuud Telecom said:

“We are very happy to be delivering the high speed satellite connectivity O3b offers. Many applications are only possible with low latency and satellite is the preferred option of Hormuud Telecom when it comes to delivering its Fixed Broad Band(FBB) , Mobile Broad Band(MBB) and Cloud Applications Services to its customers in all the major towns of Somalia. Only O3b can deliver these capabilities over satellite, and that’s what customers in Somalia increasingly demand.”

Omar Trujillo, O3b Region VP for LATAM and Africa said:
“Hormuud is a tremendously important customer for O3b—we are thrilled to be working with them in the capital city Mogadishu and the major towns of Somalia. O3b has made a commitment to bring our high speed connectivity to Somalia, and Hormuud’s track record of innovation and quality of service makes them an ideal partner.”
