Orbital Lasers Invests
in LogistLab, Forms Strategic Partnership to Strengthen
Spaceborne Telescope Development and Manufacturing

Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd.
announced an equity investment in LogistLab Inc.
(hereinafter “LogistLab”), a company specializing in the
high-precision fabrication and metrology of large
optical mirrors, to form a strategic partnership between
the two companies.
Under the partnership, Orbital
Lasers and LogistLab will work to establish a stable
supply framework for large precision mirrors, core
components of spaceborne telescopes, and pursue the
joint development of next-generation high-performance
telescopes.
Spaceborne telescopes play an
important role in both transmitting a laser beam toward
a target and receiving faint reflections from it.
Through this partnership, Orbital Lasers will strengthen
its development and manufacturing framework for
telescopes that support its core optical transmission
and reception technologies, further enhancing its
competitiveness in space optics.
Orbital Lasers is advancing three
core technologies: optical transmission technology for
space applications that delivers high-power laser beams
while achieving a combination of compact size and high
efficiency; optical reception technology for
high-resolution, high-precision measurements; and
satellite bus technology optimized for our mission
payloads. By integrating these core technologies,
Orbital Lasers is working to commercialize applications
including high-precision topographic measurement using
satellite LiDAR and a safe and efficient method for
active removal of space debris using lasers.
For optical transmission, the laser
beam must be directed at the target with both high
intensity and high pointing accuracy. For optical
reception, faint reflected light must be detected with
high sensitivity and high resolution. Spaceborne
telescopes are essential to both functions, and at the
heart of these telescopes are large, high-precision
mirrors with extremely accurate surface profiles.
LogistLab is an R&D venture
originating from Kyoto University, built on technologies
developed during the development of the 3.8-meter SEIMEI
Telescope, the largest telescope in East Asia and
Japan’s first segmented-mirror telescope. The company
specializes in the high-precision grinding and polishing
of large optical mirrors, the metrology supporting those
processes, and the fabrication and measurement of large
freeform optical surfaces.
Orbital Lasers and LogistLab have
already collaborated on the development of large,
high-precision mirrors for spaceborne telescopes through
ongoing projects. As Orbital Lasers accelerates the
development and commercialization of space optical
systems, including satellite LiDAR, further improvements
in mirror performance will be essential. It will also be
critical to establish a reliable and competitive
manufacturing and supply base capable of supporting
future business growth.

companies have formed a strategic partnership, backed by
Orbital Lasers’ equity investment in LogistLab, to build
a medium- to long-term relationship that extends beyond
their existing business collaboration. The partnership
will strengthen the development and manufacturing base
needed to commercialize space optical systems.
