Satellite Communication Industry Introduces Disaster Preparedness Initiative to Myanmar Government and Humanitarian Organizations

GVF Briefing During Myanmar Satellite Forum Aims to Facilitate Disaster-Response Coordination Between International Industry, Government and Local Stakeholders

3 November 2014

The global satellite sector, in co-ordination with the Myanmar Satellite Forum, will introduce a program that aims to facilitate more effective provision of communication solutions designed to address disasters in the country. The featured announcement is being made during the Forum on November 19, at Yangon’s Myanmar Event Park.

The disaster-preparedness program, which is being co-ordinated by GVF - the non-profit association of the global satellite communications sector – already includes a host of key disaster-response stakeholders, including end users, the satellite industry, governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as publishers and event organizers that have specialized in the field throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

“In a region where most of the world’s natural disasters occur, the versatility of satellite communications has long been recognized as effective for use in disaster preparedness and relief,” said Steve Birnbaum, Chairman of the GVF Disaster Response Initiative. “GVF welcomes Myanmar’s participation in international efforts to coordinate more closely on disaster-response efforts through improved access to – and use of – satellite solutions.”

The GVF presentation, which will be delivered by Stephane Chenard,  GVF’s Envoy to Myanmar, will include updates on a wide range of satellite solutions, including the following:

  • State-of-the-Art Technology:  Direct and immediate access to the world’s leading suppliers of satellite-based disaster-response systems and services, including bandwidth, mobile systems, VSAT networks and equipment, fly-aways, ruggedised terminals, integration and installation, consulting, legal services, and more.

  • Effective Regulation: Whilst the physical logistics of deploying satellite technology are being improved and minimized for disaster response, regulatory barriers can also readily be overcome by leveraging locally-sourced assets and, when systems and services need to be imported, through streamlined regulatory approaches.

Training & Certification: Enhanced technical capabilities are being offered to members of the disaster-response community through the GVF VSAT Installation and Operation Certification Program. Further, GVF’s database of Certified Installers can be used as a source of local, trained personnel able to assist with satellite communications deployments.
