IPSTAR Contributes to the Recovery of Mobile Communication Network in Japan

April 11, 2011

IPSTAR Company Limited (Japan Branch),  has supported the cell-phone carriers in Japan to recover their mobile communication networks in the affected areas by providing IPSTAR user terminals. With the THAICOM 4 (IPSTAR) broadband satellite, cell-phone carriers can quickly recover their 3G base stations using mobile backhaul solution in damaged areas.

The Company provided 10 units of IPSTAR user terminals and 60 sets of satellite antennas to two major cell-phone carriers. The cell-phone carriers installed the IPSTAR user terminals at the evacuation centers located in the devastated areas where it is very difficult to recover the existing cell stations. Cell-phone carriers connected the IPSTAR user terminals with their small base stations or compact base stations “Femto cell” to build instant cell-phone networks available in those areas. THAICOM 4 (IPSTAR) broadband satellite will be used as the backhaul for medium and large-scaled base stations by many cell-phone carriers. The value of the Company's contribution is currently US$140,000. In addition, THAICOM employees also provided donations to the victims of the earthquake through the cell-phone carrier.

On March 13, IPSTAR has installed the IPSTAR user terminal with a notebook computer at the local evacuation center in Wakabayashi-ward, Sendai City to provide free IP phone service to the residents. The IPSTAR sales and installation partners in Japan including COTEC Co., Ltd. (Hiroshima) and CORETEC Co., Ltd. (Hokkaido) has also provided special tariff for the IPSTAR services during this difficult time.

Mr. Yasuto Tanaka, a Country Manager of IPSTAR Japan said, “On behalf of THAICOM and IPSTAR, we would like to give our sincerest sympathy for Japan's loss due to the recent catastrophic disaster. Our first priority is to install the temporary IPSTAR mobile base stations in these affected areas in order to restore the destroyed terrestrial infrastructure of the mobile base stations. The recovery of the communication infrastructure is vital especially for the disaster victims so they are able to get connect with their love one as well as for the operations of the rescue teams.”

In the past, IPSTAR was deployed to recover the communications system in other natural disasters including the Tsunami in Thailand, the Sichuan Earthquake in China, and the Christchurch Earthquake in New Zealand, and its worldwide experience helped IPSTAR to provide efficient communication support for the latest Earthquake/Tsunami in Japan.
