O3b Networks announced today a partnership with technology provider Zieltec Telecom Innovations, to bring high-performance broadband to Fernando de Noronha. O3b’s satellite-enabled network and Zieltec’s Last Mile Solution were demonstrated to regional corporate and government entities during an event on Brazil’s premier resort island on 7th December, 2016. The event showcased the superior capabilities of O3b technology in delivering high-quality internet.
Fernando de Noronha is a remote island paradise more than 350 kilometres off the coast of Brazil. The island is only home to approximately 3,500 residents, but is visited by up to 8,000 people in the high season, coming to enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Previously, the limited connectivity delivered by traditional satellite was a prohibitive roadblock for commercial growth. But with true broadband over the O3b network, the hugely important resort industry has full access to crucial services such as online reservation systems, cloud-based airline administration services, and internet payment processing. The resorts can now also offer visitors a high-quality internet experience, essential in attracting potential visitors who want to stay connected.
O3b Networks is the fastest growing satellite operator in history, maintaining a constellation of 12 satellites and a global terrestrial network that delivers high-throughput, low-latency connectivity around the world. By orbiting closer to the earth than traditional geostationary (GEO) satellites, O3b delivers dramatically faster response times providing high-quality, cost-effective solutions to regions of the world beyond the reach of fiber.
“We have started connecting customers on the island, and are overwhelmed by the positive feedback,” said Ricardo Cruz, Business Development Director, Zieltec Telecom Innovations. “This will transform communications on the island, allowing businesses here to cater corporate clients and conferences who need quality internet connectivity. We look forward to expanding our relationship with O3b to other locations in Brazil.”
“Broadband internet connectivity is vital for high-end resorts today,” said Omar Trujillo, VP of Latin America, O3b Networks. “Vacationers want to share their experience with friends and family back home over social media and video chat, and that’s the best advertising possible for the island’s resorts. And from telemedicine to online education, the benefits of true broadband being provided on Fernando de Noronha will be invaluable to island residents year-round as well.”
