Comtech Awarded $1.3 Million in SATCOM Equipment Orders to Support Mobile Network Upgrade and Expansion in Southeast Asia

September 10, 2013

Comtech EF Data Corp., was awarded $1.3 million in additional orders for satellite communications infrastructure equipment from a leading mobile network operator in Southeast Asia. The orders included a variety of equipment, including multiple satellite modem backhaul platforms and RF products.

We are pleased to receive these orders which demonstrate the benefits of our industry-leading and spectrally efficient technologies,” commented Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. “The adoption and subsequent repeat ordering of our solution by one of the largest operators in the region is a strong endorsement of our cost-effectiveness and reliability in the mobile sector.”

The mobile network operator, an existing Comtech customer that already has more than 3 Gbps of mobile traffic over satellite, is upgrading and expanding its backhaul network to accommodate additional subscribers and the voracious demand for data-dominated services. In addition, the operator is further extending 3G HSPA mobile broadband services to in-country rural and remote areas that are less accessible, have lower density populations and generate less revenue than urban areas. Given the highly competitive nature of providing mobile services with varying traffic levels combined with diminishing ARPU pressures, the operator sought a backhaul solution that could directly lower the total cost of ownership without sacrificing service quality.

To best utilize satellite capacity for mobile backhaul, the operator selected a range of platforms to accommodate the varying traffic profiles in its mobile services, including the CDM-760 and CDM-750 modems for high-speed IP services from DS3 (45 Mbps) to STM-1 (155 Mbps), the CDM-625 modem for backhauling E1 and E2 services from its BTSs to the mobile switching centers, and the Advanced VSAT Solutions, specifically the CDM-840, CDM-800 and CDD-880 models, for a hub-spoke network serving remote locations with traffic intensity typically less than one E1. This operator is the first globally to adopt and deploy a full suite of platforms for satellite mobile backhaul.

The various platforms selected by this operator are targeted at different service and traffic profiles to enable maximum savings. Mobile network operators globally rely on the Comtech solutions to cost-effectively provide reliable and quality services from low traffic BTSs in less populous regions to high-speed trunking links for high volume traffic centers. Each of the platforms utilizes some of Comtech’s award-winning, patented or patent-pending optimization technologies that enable the reduction of costs associated with satellite communications infrastructure. Examples of these technologies are VersaFEC®, DVB-S2-EB1 Efficiency Boost, MODCODs, DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® bandwidth compression, Adaptive Coding & Modulation, Quality of Service, RAN Optimization, Header and Payload Compression.
