O3b Networks awarded license to operate in Brazil

September 4, 2013

O3b Networks has been awarded a license to operate in Brazil by the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel).

Anatel has awarded O3b Networks (Brazil) Ltda the rights to use the O3b foreign satellite system in Brazil, conferring “landing rights” on the company. The license runs for an initial period of 10 years and is renewable.

O3b will begin operations in the country later this year.  The license will allow O3b to deliver broadband connectivity to Internet Service Providers, mobile operators, businesses and governments which is high quality, ultra-fast and affordable.

Steve Collar, CEO, O3b Networks, said:

“We are very pleased by this.  O3b is a unique solution for a large vibrant country like Brazil. O3b can now launch service on schedule, covering all of Brazil with the speed of fiber and the reach of satellite."

O3b launched its first four satellites in June. It is preparing for the launch of the second set in a second launch in late September, ahead of its commercial service launch later in the year.
