Comtech Awarded $1.7 Million in Equipment Orders to Support 3G/HSPA Broadband Services in Latin America

August 7, 2013

Comtech EF Data Corp., was awarded $1.7 million in orders for infrastructure equipment. A mobile network operator in Latin America will utilize the equipment to extend existing 2G, 2.5G and 3G networks and to enable 3G HSPA mobile broadband into rural and remote areas. The order specified the CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem and RF products.

The CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem is the industry’s choice for satellite mobile backhaul. It combines advanced forward error correction with DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® bandwidth compression for maximum savings. DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier®, based on Raytheon Applied Signal Technology's patented "Adaptive Cancellation" technology, allows transmit and receive carriers of a duplex link to share the same transponder space. The optional Packet Processor for the CDM-625 will be utilized, enabling efficient IP networking and transport over satellite by providing routing capability with very low overhead encapsulation, header compression, payload compression and Quality of Service (QoS). The advanced QoS combined with header and payload compression ensures the highest quality of service with minimal jitter and latency for real-time traffic, priority treatment of mission critical applications and maximum bandwidth efficiency. Additionally, VersaFEC, a patented system of high performance short-block low-latency LDPC codes will be used. VersaFEC provides excellent coding gain with the lowest possible latency, which is particularly beneficial for latency-sensitive applications, such as satellite mobile backhaul.

For RF products, both the LPOD Block Up Converter and the HPOD High-Power Outdoor Amplifier were ordered. Offered as a compact-sized outdoor unit, the LPOD eliminates the traditional requirement for the modem to supply a DC power source and a 10 MHz reference to the BUCs and LNBs. The LPOD's optional internal reference and LNB bias T greatly simplify multi-carrier operation and provide cost-effective redundant solutions. The High-Power Outdoor Amplifiers feature field replaceable power supplies and redundant system control. The units utilize low loss combining technique and MCP-based temperature versus gain compensation.

“Our vendor of choice position for satellite mobile backhaul is based on our proven ability to facilitate sustainable and profitable connectivity,” commented Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp. “The combination of our technologies will enable this mobile network operator to cost-effectively upgrade and expand its network.”
