Comtech EF Data Introduces New High-Speed Trunking Modem
January 21, 2010
Comtech EF Data Corporation announced the introduction and general availability of the CDM-750 High-Speed Trunking Modem. It is the first modem to combine DVB-S2, Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) and DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier technologies. This new trunking modem provides efficiencies and throughput that will benefit even the most demanding point-to-point and backhaul links.
This new offering was designed with the needs of telco operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in
mind. Its innovative, high-performance architecture allows efficient networking and transport over satellite
links for a variety of applications, such as IP trunking, G.703 trunking, high speed content delivery,
disaster recovery and emergency communications.
An industry-first, the CDM-750 High-Speed Trunking Modem simultaneously supports DVB-S2, ACM and
DoubleTalk Carrier-in-Carrier. Leveraging the DVB-S2 EN 302 307 LDPC/BCH standard, the CDM-750
provides the best possible blend of coding and forward error correction to ensure that the maximum
amount of satellite traffic is transported for a given signal to noise capacity.
Rain fade, inclined orbit satellite operation, antenna pointing errors, noise and interference can all
degrade satellite link conditions. With Adaptive Coding and Modulation, the CDM-750 can respond to
changing link conditions by automatically adjusting modulation and forward error correction rates. The
result is the CDM-750’s ability to convert link margin into user capacity under all conditions.
Carrier-in-Carrier is based on Applied Signal Technology’s DoubleTalk bandwidth compression
technology. DoubleTalk uses “Adaptive Cancellation,” a patented technology that allows the transmit and
receive carriers of a full-duplex satellite link to be transmitted in the same transponder space. When
combined with advanced forward error correction and modulation techniques, DoubleTalk Carrier-in-
Carrier can deliver unprecedented operating expense savings.
For maximum flexibility, the CDM-750 also features data rates up to 169 Mbps, symbol rates up to
63 Msps, dual 70/140 MHz and L-Band capability, plus a range of modulation schemes and interfaces.
Comtech EF Data is now accepting orders for the CDM-750 High-Speed Trunking Modem.
Louis Dubin, vice president product management for Comtech EF Data commented, “The combination of
advanced technologies in this new modem will enable ISPs and telco operators to maximize satellite
resources and realize significant operating expense savings for trunking applications.”
