Myanmar can leapfrog its current teledensity and connectivity levels by use of satellite technology as part of its core infrastructure.  Many offerings and combinations are available where achieving the right solution mix will be vital for short-term, mid-term and long-term usability of the platform choice.  This presentation will discuss the options available to Myanmar to sustainably achieve its highly ambitious goals as well as raise issues that could impede not just ICT development but overall economic development.
 

11.35 Panel: Myanmar’s Connectivity Rollout, Broadband offering opportunity to make rapid advances in social and economic development.  The increase in the level of broadband access and connectivity, particularly wireless connectivity, has led to sharp gains in economic development around the globe.  For developing countries and emerging markets like Myanmar, cost and total cost of ownership (TCO) will be key elements that spell the difference between rapid rollout and thus high social and economic development or a market and/or program that fails to be realized.

U Thaung Tin, deputy minister for communications and information technology: “The broadcasting industry is moving very fast. From an economic, commercial, national prestige and national security point of view, everything points towards satellite and the demand is increasing. We have now given the satellite project top priority on our agenda and are working on getting this set up in the near future. “We have done well in terms of telecom liberalisation so far but the journey has just begun. We now have to kick momentum and fulfil the people of Myanmar’s desires and expectations. People are now asking for the quality of service and more choices and we have to deliver that.” This panel will look at the choices and solutions available now and in the near future and discuss possible options that will take broadcast services to a far greater audience than it now serves.
